The Artistry of Early Photo Album Covers–From Elegant to Unusual

The first hardbound photo albums peaked in popularity after George Eastman’s first Kodak box camera that used roll film went on the market in 1888 with the slogan, “You press the button, we do the rest.” Looking at the decorative albums was a favorite family pastime. Early albums were made in all shapes, sizes, textures, and colors–and are highly collectible today.

This exhibit features a varied collection of late 19th and early 20th century photo albums. The velvet, leather, wood, and celluloid album covers are adorned with elaborate images and metal fasteners. Cover art ranges from flowers and landscapes to animals, religious symbols, and more. Be sure to see this unusual glimpse into the past!

This exhibit is included with regular admission. Admission is free for Pittock Mansion members.
