Schedule: 10-12 hours / week (2-3 days/week)

Pittock Mansion is a house of beauty and historical significance. Operated as a historic house museum, the home provides a revealing glimpse of Portland’s past. Having grown to over 100,000 annual visitors in recent years, Pittock Mansion is one of the top destinations in Portland.

The custodial staff at Pittock Mansion is part of a team that takes the lead in caring for and preserving the historic home. The Custodian performs the daily, interim, and annual maintenance of the mansion and outbuildings.


Responsibilities include:

Perform day-to-day cleaning in the Mansion, Museum Store, Ticketing Bay, Gate Lodge and public restrooms, including floor care, glass/plexiglass care, vacuuming, detailed cleaning, dusting, and emptying trash/recycling. Detailed Cleaning includes, for example, ledges, moldings & wainscot, architectural detail, fireplace mantles, and some fixtures.

Maintaining cleanliness of outdoor terraces and drains.

Follow periodic maintenance schedule.

Replace light bulbs as needed.

Perform annual close period (currently January) maintenance and deep cleaning, including annual and periodic floor cleaning and maintenance.

Inspect buildings for cleanliness and needed repairs.

Maintain order and cleanliness of furnace rooms, supplies storage, tools and equipment.

Prepare for and assist with annual holiday exhibit decoration as needed.

Follow sound safety practices.

Other duties as needed or assigned.


Skills required:

1-2 years of custodial experience required, preferably in a historic building.

Awareness of the need to maintain 100-year old buildings in keeping with their historic integrity, while at the same time prolonging their longevity.

Demonstrated knowledge of general cleaning practices, techniques, materials and equipment, including maintaining wood, marble and marmoleum flooring.

Ability to operate a buffer, as well as other power and hand tools as needed.

Ability to operate 1914 elevator.

Ability to perform duties in a safe manner and work effectively and courteously with staff, volunteers and public.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Flexibility, professionalism, and a positive attitude.

Physical strength, stamina, and coordination to perform job tasks.

Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Ability to climb 3 flights of stairs and climb ladders up to 32′ high

Work required may not be in a climate-controlled environment

Wearing of personal protective equipment (e.g. face covering, gloves) may be required
