ABOUT PITTOCK MANSION:

Pittock Mansion is a 1914 historic house museum, owned by the City of Portland, Parks and Recreation, and operated by the Pittock Mansion Society. The premises include the Mansion, the Gate Lodge, and the Garage with beautiful gardens adjacent to Pittock Vista Point. The mission of the organization is to inspire understanding and stewardship of Portland history through Pittock Mansion, its collections, and programs. Pittock Mansion is one of the top tourist destinations in Portland.

The organization is at an exciting juncture of growth, reimagination, and evolution with the new vision, Pittock 2.0.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Marketing, Communications, and Audience Development is a full-time, exempt position primarily responsible for all marketing, communication, and special event-related needs of the Pittock Mansion Society, with particular focus on helping grow new audiences. This is a newly created position that will directly report to the CEO and will help develop and execute a comprehensive marketing and audience growth strategy and action plan that will help position the organization in a dynamic light and chart a continued growth pattern for the museum. The new Director will be an energetic, positive-minded, and resilient individual who will also be a creative thinker and an excellent project manager, juggling multiple priorities and bringing key projects from idea to completion. They will collaborate with various departmental staff of the organization to support their marketing and communication needs while supporting institutional goals as part of strategic planning, branding, and positioning. The position will supervise two newly created positions – a full-time Manager of Sales, Events, and Programs, and a part-time Education & Youth Program Coordinator. Both these supporting positions will be expected to generate audience growth and earned revenues for the organization. The Director will also collaborate with contractual graphic designers to produce exhibits and other marketing collateral.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Audience Growth: Develop and launch an annual audience growth plan with annual target goals and measurable outcomes for the current year and the future. The Director will be expected to show yearly marked attendance growth with new visitors, such as group tour visitors, domestic and international tourists, school and college audiences, special program participants, rental clients, and repeat visitors. This will be in addition to proactively sustaining the current visitor base, which has been rebuilt post-pandemic.

Marketing: Manage the production of all communication and marketing materials such as bi-annual newsletter, e-blast, member and donor communications, CEO communications, press releases, advertisements, manuals, non-interpretive signs, exhibit panels, visitor materials, invitations to key events, all marketing collaterals, and annual reports. This position will also project manage the production of historical publications. As part of the marketing efforts, the Director will lead and proactively leverage social media platforms and other digital marketing tools to increase Pittock Mansion’s presence on social media channels significantly.

Media Promotion: Forge and maintain media connections, including developing comprehensive media lists, serving as the first point of contact on all media inquiries, coordinating CEO interviews, writing press releases, coordinating media events, and actively promoting coverage.

Website: Manage the development of a new website, working very closely with the CEO and contractual web developers, while ensuring that the current website is up to date with accurate, up-to-date, and mission-fitting information. The new website development will be a significant immediate project for the Director. It will include researching and recommending web developers, managing an RFP, and facilitating the entire process from start to completion.

Data and Stories: Conduct regular compilation and analysis of all marketing data, including tracking web and social media analytics for management reports. The Director will develop and execute a plan to regularly gather visitor feedback through video interviews and surveys and share these stories and data points related to the museum’s ongoing impact across platforms, in grant reports, and donor communications.

Other:

  • Participate and contribute to the strategic planning and branding discussions.
  • Provide editing for presentations and outgoing communications.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the CEO.

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications or business management with a Marketing focus.
  • Minimum five years of direct experience in a Marketing and Communications role for a nonprofit or cultural organization. Museum experience preferred.
  • Proficient in project management while being resourceful and nimble.
  • Ability to be resilient, adaptive, collaborative, and creative, and embrace the fact that Pittock Mansion is at a “building as its flying” stage where change is a constant.
  • Experience and success with developing and managing ticketed opportunities that balance organizational mission with sustainable earned revenue strategies.
  • A result-oriented mindset is necessary.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Editing experience is highly desired.
  • Knowledge and experience with software, including standard workplace technology, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.
  • The ability to stay abreast of new industry developments, trends, and best practices.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to engage authentically, effectively, and professionally with different audiences, including community members, staff, board members, partners, and funders.
  • Highly organized, with attention to detail, ability to multitask and articulately switch priorities.
  • Ability to listen and synthesize ideas from various stakeholders.
  • Ability to take feedback objectively.
  • Ability to consistently produce high-quality deliverables promptly.
  • Ability to work well with directions as well as autonomously and collaboratively.

Physical Activities/ Other Conditions

  • Ability to work in a shared/open space office environment.
  • Workstations may not be in a climate-controlled environment.
  • Light to medium work that includes moving objects up to 30 pounds.
  • Work is required to be done onsite at Pittock Mansion, with some hybrid as approved by the direct supervisor, or during inclement weather days.
  • Ability to navigate stairs and a fair amount of walking on the Pittock Estate grounds.
