Type: Part-time/Hourly/Non-Exempt

Hourly: $22-24/hour

Weekly: Average of 20 hours/week/weekend

ABOUT PITTOCK MANSION:

Pittock Mansion is a 1914 historic house museum and one of Portland’s top tourist destinations. Pittock Mansion Society, a private nonprofit organization, collaborates with the City of Portland, Parks, and Recreation, to operate the Mansion. The premises include the Mansion, the Gate Lodge, and the Garage with beautiful gardens adjacent to the Pittock Viewpoint. Our mission at Pittock Mansion Society is to inspire understanding and stewardship of Portland history through the Mansion, its collections, and programs.

The organization, under new leadership, is at an exciting juncture of strategic growth and reimagination, having laid out a new transformation vision, Pittock 2.0, which aims to make the museum a relevant history institution, a dynamic destination, and a key community partner. As part of the new vision, Pittock Mansion wants to develop and offer a new series of special programs and events for the public as well as coordinate and host internal and external events such as VIP receptions, exhibit-related receptions, lectures, seasonal events for families and kids as well as rentals of the premises by external groups.

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Facilities & Operations Assistant will work under the Director of Facilities and Operations (DOFO), supporting all departments at Pittock Mansion with the care and cleaning of three buildings on campus. This includes collaborating with the janitorial crew and handling various related duties such as daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of the building interiors as delineated in the duties and responsibilities, as well as doing event setup and teardown, workspace reorganization, supply checks and stocking, security

system monitoring, and pest control. The ideal candidate will be dependable, hardworking, and possess excellent work ethics and communication skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Cleaning and Maintenance:

· Vacuuming and dusting of interior rooms and spaces that includes baseboard cleaning, decorative rails, windowsills, light fixtures, and hard surfaces in all three buildings (daily on some, rotational schedule based on buildings/sections)

· Cleaning of interior and exterior windows that are accessible (daily on some, rotational schedule on others)

· Cleaning of all non-artifact materials in the mansion and gate lodge including interpretive panels, stanchions, and props inside buildings (weekly).

· Monitoring the historic plumbing fixtures in all three buildings to assess potential leaks and notifying DOFO to submit work orders as needed. (monthly)

· Terrace sweeping (weekly).

· Cleaning and removing debris from reachable areas of gutter and drains, including unclogging and snaking drains on terraces.

· Vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning under furniture (monthly)

· Dusting and cleaning of chandeliers and exterior light fixtures in the mansion and gate lodge (bi-monthly)

· Cleaning/mopping back stairwells and hallways in the mansion and gate lodge (weekly).

· Changing light bulbs in all three buildings (as needed: frequent task)

· Cleaning of grounds interpretive panels (daily) and graffiti removal (as needed)

· Cobwebbing and pest control monitoring in all three buildings (weekly). Scheduling pest control service as needed.

· Take out recycling and garbage in the gift store receiving area and the Gate Lodge to dumpsters (as needed)

· Open the gate to the park grounds and pick up trash at the entrance of the grounds.

Building Security:

· Second “on call” list contact person for Pittock Mansion Security Alarm System. Ability to come on-site during an alarm situation and represent the mansion to Parks security.

· Direct outside technicians and service repair if PP&R staff is not available

· Assist museum staff and visitors in emergency situations and help with incident reports (if required).

Installation and Event set up/tear down support:

· Assist the museum staff with exhibition installation and take down. This may involve hanging art, moving furniture and items from the basement (during the holidays)

· Assist other departmental staff for programs, special events, and rental set up and tear down. This may require the flexibility of schedule over weekday mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Other Support:

· Dispose, move, and build office furniture and equipment for staff as directed by the DOFO

· Ensure water delivery to the three buildings. Monitor water use and order.

· Help with shipment and other deliveries to the offices as needed.

· Supporting DOFOO regarding checking and determining if the Mansion will close or remain open during inclement weather (communication with PP&R necessary)

· Add and remove minor hardware in buildings (ex: curtain rods, window blinds, coat hangers, etc.).

Qualifications

· Experience with similar custodial or general maintenance roles preferred

· Ability to follow directions and meet set expectations but work independently with little or no supervision on a day-to-day basis

· Regularity of onsite presence.

· Good interpersonal and oral communication skills with the ability to work with staff across the organization.

· Reliability and Punctuality

· Eye for detail and proactive problem solver

· Flexibility in scheduling based on organizational needs

Physical Qualifications

· This position requires the ability to navigate uneven terrain, including stairs and hills, at this historic site. Candidates should be comfortable with walking up hill and climbing stairs.

· Must be able to lift 50 to 80 lbs. and can bend, lift, carry, and regularly climb stairs

· Must be able to move, climb, and work from ladders, particularly using a specialized stair ladder to maintain the chandelier over the grand staircase.

· Must be able to work outside in seasonal weather conditions

· Ability to work in a shared / open space office environment.

· Workstations may not be in a climate-controlled environment.

· Wearing personal protective equipment (e.g., face covering, gloves) may be required.
