Programs and Education Specialist – Limited Duration 

Location: Pittock Mansion, Portland, OR 
Schedule: 16 hours/week 
Pay: $20/hour 
Duration: May – Aug 2026

ABOUT PITTOCK MANSION: 

Pittock Mansion is a 1914 historic house museum, owned by the City of Portland, Parks and Recreation and operated by the Pittock Mansion Society. The premises include the Mansion, the Gate Lodge, and the Garage, with beautiful gardens adjacent to Pittock Vista Point. The mission of the organization is to inspire understanding and stewardship of Portland history through Pittock Mansion, its collections, and programs. Having grown to attract approximately 90,000 annual visitors in recent years, Pittock Mansion is one of the top tourist destinations in Portland. 

The Program and Education Specialist will support the program and education staff with a variety of tasks as delineated below. Weekend availability is required. 

Essential Duties: 

Summer inaugural programs & events 

  • Assist with setup and breakdown of events 
  • May require moving tables, chairs, and other event items 
  • Assist with onsite vendor management  
  • Assist vendor load in and out and guide vendors to their setup location.  
  • Ensure venue setup aligns with event layout and design plans  
  • Review event floorplans prior to event and ensure all vendors and event equipment are set up in the correct locations. 
  • Assist event staff, volunteers and vendors 
  • Support and lead weekend arts and crafts programs independently or with volunteers 
  • Event preparation work. 

Assist with youth and K-12 programming 

  • Roving and crowd control during field trips to ensure the safety of students and Mansion art and artifacts 
  • Assist in implementing new K-12 tour programming 
  • Assist in teaching and running youth summer camps during the following weeks: June 22-25, July 13-16, and August 3-6 
  • Camp duties include but are not limited to setup and takedown of camp materials, managing supplies, engaging with children, and implementing art, history, and nature-related activities.  
  • Event preparation work. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to follow instructions from managers  
  • Ability to learn and lead educational experiences 
  • Strong communication skills, with an emphasis on problem-solving 
  • Ability to adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements 
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible to changing needs and requirements 

Education & Work Experience: 

  • Minimum 1 year experience working with children, with an emphasis on safety and engagement 
  • Experience working with events, community programs, or similar  
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in a professional work environment. 

Physical Qualifications: 

  • Must have reliable transportation to commute to and from work sites as needed.   
  • This position requires the ability to navigate uneven terrain, including stairs and hills, at this historic site. Candidates should be comfortable with walking up hills and climbing stairs.  
  • Must be able to lift 50 to 80 lbs. and can bend, lift, carry, and regularly climb stairs  
  • Must be able to move, climb, and work from ladders, particularly using a specialized stair ladder to maintain the chandelier over the grand staircase.  
  • Must be able to work outside in seasonal weather conditions  
  • Ability to work in a shared / open space office environment.  
  • Workstations may not be in a climate-controlled environment.  
  • Wearing personal protective equipment (e.g., face covering, gloves) may be required.
