Georgiana Pittock and the City of Roses - new exhibit at Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 7/12/24

The Pittock Mansion Society is excited to announce the opening of its latest exhibit, “Georgiana Pittock and the City of Roses.” This captivating exhibit will be on view from July 15, 2024, to January 9, 2025, at Pittock Mansion and is included with general admission. Additionally, a private exhibit opening event featuring the Royal Rosarians and a rose-planting ceremony in Georgiana Pittock’s honor will take place at noon on Tuesday, July 16 on Pittock Acres. Several of the Pittock family members will be present at the ceremony.

Georgiana Burton Pittock (c.1845-1918) led a multifaceted life and left a lasting legacy upon the city of Portland. As the wife of Henry Pittock, publisher of the Oregonian newspaper, she not only raised a family, but also leveraged her family’s power and influence to shape the civic landscape of Portland. Remembered by friends as “handsome and vivacious”, “simple and frank in manner and outspoken in speech,” Georgiana devoted much of her public life to charitable and community causes in Portland. In collaboration with other civic leaders and reformers, she worked to improve living conditions for women and children. A skilled fundraiser and gardener, she channeled both interests to effect social change, leaving a lasting imprint on Portland and its identification as the “City of Roses.”

“Georgiana Pittock’s story is a testament to the vibrant history of Portland and the power of one person’s efforts to inspire generations to come,” Paula Gangopadhyay, CEO, Pittock Mansion. “At a time when the roles of women were transforming, Georgiana lived and worked in both the private and public spheres. Pittock Mansion Society is pleased to unveil some of the unknown aspects of Georgiana’s personality through this exhibit and is committed to sharing stories of other Portlanders who contributed to the growth of our city.”

This exhibition is produced by Pittock Mansion Society as part of its Pittock Connections Annual Exhibit Series with sponsorship from The Ritz Family Foundation and support from Stephen and Nancy Dudley. The Pittock Mansion Society extends its heartfelt gratitude to Oregon Historical Society, Architectural Heritage Center, Norm Gholston, and Mark Humpal Fine Art for their invaluable contributions to the exhibit.  Join Pittock Mansion in celebrating Georgiana Pittock’s legacy – a story that continues to bloom in the heart of Portland.
